Aftercare: a community of support
Updated: Jan 12, 2021
Aftercare is an important part of the programme of recovery from addiction at Ocean Hills Detox & Rehab.
Two weeks of rehab is just the start of living a life in recovery – it provides time and distance from life, addiction and responsibilities, and is also a chance to gather tools and support from professional clinicians.
But the work of recovery really begins when you start living again as a sober person. Because life happens on life's terms, you will need to use every tool at your disposal and every ounce of support you can get to get through the challenges of life.
That's where the Ocean Hills aftercare programme comes in. Every week, our Ocean Hills community of guests who have completed the live-in programme meet online to support each other. Facilitated by an experienced addiction professional from Ocean Hills, there is usually a formal topic and a chance for everyone to raise issues, ask questions, offer advice or just listen. There's plenty of laughter, sometimes a few tears and always, a feeling of respect, safety and privacy.
Former guests also remain part of the Ocean Hills community through weekly contact with our Occupational Therapist.
"It's the highlight of the week for many of us, says Elaine Atkinson, founder of Ocean Hills. "We're there for each other as a supportive community when we need each other."
